WHAT IS DOSE OF DURHAM?
Dose of Durham is a zine (a small-circulation, self-produced booklet or magazine) about exploring the history, culture, and beauty of the Bull City by bicycle. Each monthly “prescription” reimagines Durham through a different lens. Each prescription is packed with history lessons, challenges, recipes, current events, sights to see, bike routes, and more - all delivered to you in a digestible dose.
ABOUT THE CREATOR
I'm a local artist and cyclist. I moved to Durham in 2014 and then again in 2021, after a brief stint abroad for graduate school. My BA and MSc are both in Neuroaesthetics, a discipline focused on the intersection of cognition and perception of art - my research is focused on the psychology of how art transforms negative stimuli into experiences of beauty. My work in the community is centered on storytelling, how we create meaning, and connect with each other and our environment.
I learned how to ride a bike in 2022, shortly after returning to Durham, and as someone with no athletic background and no driver's license, it was transformative to my life and helped me rediscover Durham. My aim with Dose of Durham is to equip more people to embrace cycling as a lifestyle - something I also do through my day job in communications at Bike Durham. My zines and bike riding initiatives are all focused on cultivating a sense of community and connectedness to Durham, fostering relationships with local businesses, and raising awareness for issues surrounding sustainable transit, urban design, and community health.
